As did Adam and Eve, Cain, Moses, Jonah, we flee from God, often hiding in rationalism or religion. “Religion can be like an inoculation against God—get a tiny dose of the dead virus (creeds, etc.) . . . so that the real virus, the wild, unremitting, voracious, implacable power of God . . . can’t get you.” Yet, when finally overcome by gratitude, we can hear God calling us . . ..
